Rugby Union: Llangefni defeat Bay ahead of Caernarfon clash

LLANGEFNI 22 COLWYN BAY 18

SWALEC WRU DIVISION ONE NORTH

A FOUR-TRY bonus point victory was just the ticket for Llangefni ahead of this Saturday’s ultra-tough visit to champions Caernarfon.

Playing in atrocious conditions, with a strong wind and blustery showers, it was a game for forwards to show their worth, to carry the ball and pierce defensive lines.

Colwyn Bay struck first with an Ashley James penalty but Cefni hit back when number eight and captain William Bown picked up from a scrum and dived over the try line.

With the ball like a bar of soap, knock-ons were inevitable and such an offence from the home side enabled James to kick a second penalty for Bay before the break.

The second half saw Llangefni hooker Rhodri Owen smash through the Colwyn defence to ground following a tap penalty five metres out.

Bay came back hard and second row Chris Hughes’ try earned a narrow 11-10 lead.

Shortly after, the Anglesey hosts took advantage of a scrum 22 metres and a neat build-up found winger Dave Williams who ran in Cefni’s third try in the corner, Arwel Roberts converting.

A similar try followed when the Cefni forwards took a lineout and the backs inter-passed before Roberts put in Williams for his second and Llangefni’s fourth bonus point touchdown.

The visitors refused to give up and from a home infringement they were awarded a penalty some 10 metres from the try line.

A quick tap and pass released Bay captain Bryn Williams who bulldozed over for the try, improved by James, but Llangefni held on.
