Football: Holyhead Hotspur FC Reserves go second

HOLYHEAD Hotspur Reserves leapt into second place in the Teejac.com Gwynedd League after a 4-2 home win over Porthmadog Reserves.

Darren Garmey opened the Harbourmen’s account with a penalty a minute before the break, then second half strikes from Bryn Roberts, Sam Woods and Anthony Platt sealed it.

Fourth-placed Llangefni Town Reserves were also in destructive form, demolishing Real Llandudno 9-0 at Talwrn Road.

Richard Hughes netted four, Daron Jones two, and Gafyn Buckland, Barry Edwards and Steven Jones completed the rout, Cefni having led 3-0 at the interval.

Goals inside the first 20 minutes from Gareth Wyn Roberts (penalty) and top scorer Gary Bolton were enough to earn Bodedern Athletic a narrow 2-1 verdict over Llanfairfechan Town.

Bangor University continued their improvement by emerging from Beaumaris Town 3-2 winners.

Usual suspects Jack Flatt, Dave Bullough and Peter Reynolds struck for the students, Anthony Lewis and Anthony Hughes having handed Beau a 2-1 lead at the turnaround.

In the NWCFA Intermediate Cup first round, the much-postponed Aston Park Rangers v Gwalchmai tie finally went ahead and the Anglesey side prevailed 3-2. Paul Bryant and a Craig Evans double did the business for the visitors.

In round two, Gaerwen lost out 3-2 on penalties to Bethel at Lôn Groes. It ended 4-4 after extra time, Billy Evans and Sion Campbell bagging a brace apiece for the islanders who led twice and came from behind on two occasions in a topsy-turvy thriller.

Rhiwlas went through on penalties, defeating strong Clwyd League side Abergele Rovers 3-2 in a shoot-out at Beach Road, Bangor.

The match itself ended 2-2, Lee McCormack and Paul Ainsworth on the mark for Tony Jones’ men who needed a tonic after recent poor league form.
