SWANSEA City Opera (SCO) are back at the Ucheldre Centre this weekend with their latest production, The Elixir of Love (L’Elisir d’Amore) by Gaetano Donizetti.
Regularly listed in The Times The Knowledge top five operas, SCO has now firmly established itself as one of the foremost British touring comp- anies and has built a fine reput- ation for high- quality, access- ible productions.
For this magical Donizetti comedy, SCO has teamed up with co-producers, Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon and The Coliseum in Aberdare, and is updating the setting to the late 1920’s in the unique village of Portmeirion.
Portmeirion was designed by the celebrated architect Clough Williams-Ellis and was the setting for the famous The Prisoner series starring Patrick McGoohan.
Popular since its premiere in Milan in 1832, this charming comedy has delighted audiences throughout the world.
Full of hilariously colourful characters this is a deliciously frothy tale of romance.
The score is full of memorable tunes including Una furtiva lagrima, a favourite of tenors from Caruso to Gigli, and the aria that catapulted Pavarotti to fame.
The opera will be sung in a witty English translation and promises a visual spectacle with specially designed 1920’s costumes.
Together with a live orchestra, and the centre’s superb acoustics, this promises to be an evening not to be missed.
The Elixir of Love will be at the Ucheldre Centre on Saturday, November 22, at 7.30pm, and for further information, contact (01407) 763361 or email he@ucheldre.org
