More jobs are lost as Gaerwen electrical firm folds

ANGLESEY has been rocked by more jobs losses, as Gaerwen-based Menai Electrical confirms that it has called the receivers and is making 50 people redundant.

The industrial and commercial electric installation contractors said the problems stemmed from not being paid for work they had carried out.

Director Paul Hughes said: “We have been made insolvent because the bank called in our debt.

“We are now in the process of winding everything down.

“It’s been very tough telling a very dedicated workforce that they will be losing their jobs and I wish to thank them for all their support over the years.”

Liquidator Robert Rutherford said: “The company had their bank facility withdrawn and then there were rumours around that they were in trouble – they had nowhere to go.”

County councillor Eric Jones said: “This is terrible news and you wonder how many more companies are going to suffer.

“It’s going to be very difficult for a lot of young families.

“Losing 50 jobs is devastating for this area especially since it comes so close to the announcement of job losses at Eaton in Holyhead.

“We’re already one of the poorest areas in the UK and the problem now, is where to find work here.

“It’s a very difficult time, the banks have needed to get their houses in order but the problem now is that small businesses will suffer.

“You have to wonder where next?”

Earlier this month Holyhead circuit breaker factory Eaton, announced its imminent closure with the loss of 265 jobs, with Aluminum Powder Company (ALPOCO) also announcing the loss of 13 jobs.
