PLANS to convert Llangefni town hall into offices have been given the green light.
Councillors have approved plans to turn the Grade Two listed building into two floors of office space with an archive area in the roof, meeting area and accommodation for staff and the public.
The ground floor will be still be used by market traders.
The plans were put in by enterprise agency Menter Môn.
It is expected that once the conversion is complete, Menter Môn will move their headquarters to the town hall from their current location on the Bryn Cefni industrial estate, and charity organisation Medwrn Môn will follow then.
Menter Môn chief executive Gerallt Llywelyn said: "This is great news for us but we don’t want to go overboard in our celebrations. There’s a lot of hard work to do.
"We still don’t actually own the building outright and are still going through the process of finalising the contracts.
"But we've been very eager to go through the planning process so that everything is in place for us to start work straight away once everything is completed.
"We hope that work will start in January and that it will be completed by October 2010.
"The plan at the moment is to move our staff over before Christmas 2011."
In July 2008, the planning committee rejected plans to convert the hall into two retail outlets.
Later that year, the hall was sold off to Menter Môn along with Llys Llywelyn in Aberffraw, the Prince’s Pier, in Menai Bridge, and a building at Amlwch Port for £481,599.
In 1994 the hall was burnt down and £1 million was spent on rebuilding it.
Over the years, a number of island residents believed that Oriel Môn should have been relocated to the town hall.
