VIOLENT crime is up by more than 100% in parts of Holyhead as shocking statistics show crime is on the rise on Anglesey.
Figures released by North Wales Police for the first three months of the year, show an increase in violent crime of 154.5% in Morawelon with Kingsland following close behind with 137.5%.
In Llangefni, the Cefni ward has seen an 88.9% increase in violent crime, while the figure for Anglesey as a whole is 44.3%, nearly four times the North Wales average of 12.4%.
But, North Wales Police believe that when looking at the whole picture for the year 2008/09, a decrease in criminal behaviour has taken place.
Fears about policing on the island have been raised in recent months as the Holyhead and Anglesey South districts were amalgamated to make one force for the island.
The one island approach came into effect on April 1.
Holyhead Mayor Cllr Ailia Lewis said: “You don’t see enough police out on the streets.
“ I get on well with police officers and PCSOs but they don’t seem too visible at the moment. You can’t have CCTV everywhere.
“There is a need for the police to stop and talk to people, to get to know the area on foot rather than driving around in cars.”
