Dorothy Bulled is elected Bangor mayor for a second time

A PILLAR of the community has been elected mayor of Bangor for the second time.

Cllr Dorothy Bulled MBE was mayor in 2002-03 and following a meeting of the city council last week has been voted to succeed Cllr Jean Forsyth for 2010-11.

Cllr Bulled was proposed by Cllr Derek Hainge and seconded by Cllr Bryn Hughes.

Cllr Huw Williams was elected as deputy mayor for the next municipal year.

She said: "I’m thrilled to bits and I’m looking forward to working alongside the people of Gwynedd and organisations such as Bangor Pride.

"It’s important that we encourage people to support the city and make sure the place becomes vibrant again.

"I think the recession has hit here more now than it had previously and new investment is needed.

"But with things like the public realm regeneration and the carnival and Gwyl Bangor, we have got events to look forward to."

In 2008, Cllr Bulled received an MBE from Prince Charles after travelling down to Buckingham Palace with her son Leslie and daughter-in-law Michelle.

She received the honour because of all the time she had dedicated over the years to various voluntary and community organisations.

"That was a wonderful day and I’m not sure I’ve fully recovered yet!" she admitted.

"But I fully intend to keep up my work in the community and I know I will have the full support of the city council and all the councillors, which is very important to me."

Cllr Bulled has excelled in charity work, especially on behalf of children and young people, elderly people and people with disabilities, and has been instrumental in helping to secure many improvements for the local community.

She is heavily involved with the Ty Cegin Healthy Living Centre near her home in Maesgeirchen, and also helps the RNLI, community police and neighbourhood watch, and an OAP luncheon club in Penrhosgarnedd.

To add to this, she is the chairman of Llechen Credit Union, chairman of both the board of governors at Ysgol Glan Cegin and residents’ association MATRA and vice-chairman of Communities First.

Cllr Bulled has been the organist at St Peter’s Church in Penrhosgarnedd since she was 14.

She also had to recover from the loss of her son Martin, who died from leukaemia aged just 12, in 1986.

She will be invested during the traditional mayoral ceremony in May.
