A FERRY service could return to the Menai Strait taking people between Bangor and Glyn Garth near Menai Bridge on Anglesey.
Resurrecting the service, which stopped in 1976, and repackaging it as a “water shuttle” is just one of five proposals being discussed in public meetings across Anglesey next week.
Businesspeople and community leaders in Bangor have reacted positively to the proposal and would like to find out more.
The scheme is part of plans worth £4m to boost marine tourism around Anglesey which also include a water shuttle between Moel y Don near Brynsiencyn and Caernarfon.
Hotelier Nick Murray-Williams, who runs the Eryl Môr hotel near Bangor Pier with his brother Neil, said: “This is the first I’ve heard of this, it does sound like an excellent idea.
“I think I’ll have to go to the meeting to find out more.
“It’s good to hear of these initiatives being thought of.”
Glenys Tematema, who runs the tourism kiosk on Bangor Pier, said: “I think this sort of facility is much needed for the area.
“Visitors ask me all the time when they visit the pier, is there a boat trip?
“Hopefully, this idea can take off and happen again and provide a much needed boost to the local economy.
“It could be something residents could enjoy too, not just visitors and students.”
Nigel Pickavance, chairman of The People of Bangor Community Group, said: “What a fantastic idea. If this comes off as it would certainly boost the economy on Anglesey which is something it certainly needs and I'm sure the city would also benefit from passing trade.”
A spokesman for Anglesey County Council, said: “We have estimated that the proposed schemes would cost in the region of £4m.
“We are now in the process of trying to identify additional funding to achieve our aspirations, and early consultation with
residents will form an important part of the process.”
A ferry sailed between Glyn Garth and Bangor Pier for nearly 80 years.
Information on the restoration of the Gazelle Jetty and the Menai Strait Shuttle, will be at the Gazelle Hotel, Glyn Garth, on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 11am to 3pm.
