YSGOL Uwchradd Caergybi is set to receive a £2m makeover after being given a Welsh Assembly grant.
At an executive meeting of Anglesey County Council it was agreed to release £2m from the 2009/10 Schools Big Improvement Grant to go towards phase one of the Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi refurbishment project.
Headteacher Martin Wise, who took over at the school’s helm in January is over the moon.
He said: “Obviously I’m delighted with the council’s commitment and support given to the school.
“Following the recent favourable mini-inspection and best-ever GCSE results, this upgrade will go a long way to help raise standards. This £2m refurbishment is a fantastic start to that process.
“We’ll be meeting with the council shortly to look at proposals for the development.
“We have already identified the need to refurbish Safle Saith, our year seven building as a priority.
“Safle Saith is where year seven pupils spend most of their time and where we hope to prepare them for a good start to their time at secondary school.”
He said that work currently being undertaken on the school’s roof and window ledges is nothing to do with the new grant.
Cllr JV Owen said: “This is great news for Holyhead.
“I hope that this will go a long way to persuading people in the town that there’s no need to send their children to schools off the island for a good education.”
In July it was announced that the neighbouring historic red brick former Cybi school, which was first used over a century ago and was last used as the school’s sixth form building, will be demolished.
